Quality Policy

The quality policy of the Department of Biology for the development and improvement of the MSc Program involves the following main objectives:

1) The high level and quality of studies of the MSc according to international criteria.

In order to achieve this goal, the Department has organised and will update the Curriculum in order to achieve learning outcomes and qualifications that are in line with the European and National Qualifications Framework for Higher Education level 7. It uses all modern teaching methods and practices and frequently trains its teaching staff in pedagogical issues through the `Training of Trainers' activities of the University of Crete. The teaching staff of the MSc is selected by the Department each year on the basis of excellence in research and high quality teaching.

2)  The connection of the education offered by the MSc with the cutting-edge research carried out in the Department and the direct participation of postgraduate students in this research.

Cutting-edge research carried out in the Department in the research areas of the Master's programme informs the curriculum and guides the educational process. The latter plays a particular role in the preparation of the Thesis. For this reason, the Steering Committee of the MSc pays special attention to the integration of postgraduate students into the appropriate research groups of the Department and offers special support and guidance in this process. In this context, the Department's Policy as a whole places particular emphasis on the development of Research and the creation of a modern research environment with international radiance which includes active research groups, international collaborations and visiting researchers and professors.

3)  The continuous monitoring and improvement of the training provided.

The courses of the MSc are evaluated at regular intervals (every semester) by the students, in collaboration with the Department's Quality Assurance Committee (OMEA) and the University's Quality Assurance Unit (ΜΟΔΙΠ), ensuring that the MSc Steering Committee and the Department have continuous access to the students' perspective on the curriculum and the need for pottential changes. The assessment is conducted at a random time, unknown to the instructor during the 7th, 8th and 9th week of the courses. The results of the evaluation are carefully reviewed by the MSc Director and the Steering Committee, and necessary recommendations or changes are made where necessary.

The Department of Biology also encourages continuous training of all its staff via online courses and seminars in new technologies (e.g. using the  Mathesis  online course environment). Members of the Department's computing support team assist in the continuous training of all staff in relation to computing infrastructure, so that the education provided is constantly improved by the use of new technologies.

4)  The enhancement of the international profile of the MSc and the attraction of students from abroad.

The Department of Biology and the Steering Committee of the MSc seeks to enhance the international profile of the MSc by increasing the number of international staff involved in the research and educational activities of the MSc, attracting international postgraduate students and increasing the number of international activities (e.g. international conferences and collaborations) that allow the participation of postgraduate students. In order to attract postgraduate students from abroad, the MSc 'Immunobiology' will be listed in the list of foreign language postgraduate programmes of Greek Universities on the website https://studyingreece.edu.gr/. The MSc will also be advertised on the programme website through a modern and well updated website.

5) Monitoring and assisting the professional career of graduates.

The Department of Biology systematically monitors the professional careers of the graduates of the MSc by maintaining constant communication with them. It also seeks to expand job fair activities between postgraduate students and employers and to promote the achievements and good practices of the Department through the Department's website and e-mails to graduates.

6) Improving infrastructure and strengthening financial resources.

The Department of Biology seeks to modernize, improve and increase the available digital infrastructure within its financial capabilities and in collaboration with the central administration of the University of Crete. Through its alumni it seeks to attract donations and possible scholarships for postgraduate students. The achievement of the aforementioned objectives is a key aim of the Department and is made possible by the high quality of the members of the Department and the active participation of students in its activities.
